This might come as a BIG surprise! Because it did to me! A January article in The International Harold Tribune had an interesting article entitled, Tests find hazardous levels of mercury in tuna sushi in New York.
The article stated that recent laboratory tests in New York found so much mercury in tuna sushi that eating two or three pieces a buy l-arginine hydrochloride dosage at some restaurants could wholesale tribulus terrestris dosages reviews side effects a health hazard. The article further stated that eight out of the 44 pieces of sushi purchased by the New York Times for testing had mercury levels so high that the FDA could take legal action to remove the fish from the market.
Although all of the samples were obtained in New York City, some experts believe that similar results would be observed elsewhere.
Here is something that is even more interesting. While the FDA and EPA have warned children and pregnant women against consumption of canned tuna, fresh tuna was not included in the advisory. Interestingly, the tuna sushi in The New York Times sample contained far more Mercury than is curcumin tumeric powder extract found in canned tuna.
Mercury is a concern to pregnant women because it is easily transferred to a baby in the womb. In other words, if a pregnant woman has high levels of mercury in her system from eating a lot of contaminated fish, the baby could be at risk. It is common knowledge that studies have shown that Mercury is dangerous to children. Studies now suggest that Mercury may also cause health problems for adults, including an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and neurological symptoms to name a few.
The irony is, if it was not for the increasing risk of contamination by substances such as Mercury, PCBs, Dioxins and other contaminants, fish really would be the optimal food source for your Omega 3 Fatty Acids.
The New York Times article further stated that the scientists who performed the analysis said they were "frankly surprised" by the results, and that they had to run the tests several times to make sure there was no mistake.
In the meantime, the argument for eating fresh fish versus taking a safe fish supplement rages on.
Frankly, the choice is confusing. You need to become an educated consumer because not all fish oil supplements are created equal either. There are definitely quality differences in fish oil brands. There are many good fish oils on the market. The new generation of ultra-refined, pharmaceutical-grade fish oils are very pure and have some very distinct characteristics, For instance, the concentration of EPA and DHA should be greater than 60 percent; the concentration of PCBs should be less than 45 ppb/g; the concentration of Dioxins less than 1 ppt; and the concentration of Mercury should be less than 10 ppb. One such product is SeaLogix Omega-3. More information can be found at SeaLogix Omega-3 Information.
