Although lentils, peas and certain fruits and vegetables are good sources of fiber, without access to many cereals or breads, adequate fiber daily can be difficult to get.

The tiny seed absorbs up to 9 times its weight in water, so it's best not to eat it dry or on its own. If you do decide to eat it on its own, remember to drink lots of water.
Chia makes a great egg replacement in a variety of recipes; it thickens smoothies or sauces and can be added to your favorite flavor of yogurt. I have made fruit pies using chia instead of flour as the thickener. As the pie bakes and the fruits release their juices, the chia absorbs it, so your pie has a great texture, and also many additional benefits.
